In many ways the Brand of a company is considered their soul, their identity. It is the ideas and ideals a company stands for that are deeper than the products they sell. This unit asks students to consider this theory and apply it to branding themselves.
Who are you really besides your hobbies and physical appearance? What is enduring and present throughout every part of your life? What do you stand for and what is important to you? What is it about you, that without this quality, you would no longer be the same person?
After self reflection and personal research, students begin the process of developing the visual components of their brand. From a logo to its application, students design their identity from concept to production and in turn create a metaphorical self portrait through their branding process.
BRANDING THE SOUL : LOGOS AND APPLICATION
"Soon you will not be able to speak or move. You have a limited amount of time to make something that will leave behind your “voice” for others.
If you could leave (someone/a group of people/the world) with only one statement, what would it be?"
In this unit students explore propaganda art in it's many forms, from the satirical and funny to the serious and monumental. Students are then proposed the above questions and begin to consider what they truly have to say. They are encouraged not to simply reiterate what is popular or "in" at the moment, but to embrace what issues and problems that afect them personally and daily. They are then tasked to express their opinion or voice through a persuasive poster using collage and scanned found objects.
TURTH AND VOICE : PROPAGANDA AND INFLUENTIAL ART
Below is a sampeling of units and lessons I have done with my students. In the classroom, artists are typically given questions to deal with and then are allowed freedom to explore and work within the presented themes and ideas.
All the work presented here is done by high school students and is not of my making.
